The Altai Territory
The Altai territory is a subject of the Russian Federation. It borders on the Novosibirsk and Kemerovo oblasts, the Altai republic. Besides the Altai territory has a border with Eastern Kazakhstan. Its total area is 168 thousand square kilometers. As of January 1, 2007, the population was 2523,2 thousand people. The Altai territory has two major landscape types: mountains – in the east; steppe – in the west. Much Altai area is covered by forests, mostly coniferous forests. Mineral recourses are rich in polymetallic and iron ores, nickel, cobalt, common salt, soda, coal, precious metals. The climate is continental.
The governmental center of the Altai Territoryis Barnaul (population: 649,6 thousand people.) Situated in the north-central quadrant, it sits on the bank of the beautiful Ob River. Barnaul is located 3419 km southeast of Moscow.
Labor potential: The economically active population is 1,3 mln people (This accounts for more than 50% of total regional population)
